The City I Love

One night after a restless sleep, I awoke to a text message from a friend from college. It simply read “Why do you love NY so much?.” My response, “Simple it’s home” and returned to bed.

When I asked him what prompted to ask the question, he told me that while everyone else thinks that NY, as in the city of 8 million souls not the state, is the greatest place on earth, he said I have a different love since I’ve lived there all my life.

I realized that he was right I do love my hometown. Now New York is not Mayberry from “The Andy Griffith Show” by any stretch of the imagination. Between the crowds, crime, rising class division, political shifts and everything in between the city that many people love seems slipping away. Smith’s Bar on 44th and 8th Gone, Shakespeare and Co. hanging on by a thread and Cafe Edison is on the chopping block as we speak. How does the city hold onto its soul yet still present some form of progress? It’s a hard question that no one, not even your writer here has the right answer or even answers to.

That said how can I came to fall in love with this crazy place? Well take a journey with me and judge for yourself at the end.

After months of delay, procrastination and a little lack of courage on my part, I’ve decided to reactivate my blog “thoughts off the keyboard” effective immediately. While I’ll be learning on the go, I want to use this not only as a platform for my career as a journalist but to hone my craft as a writer and observer of the world. so without further ado lets the thoughts fly off!
